DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OLD AND NEW COVENANT
What is the difference between old and new covenant? This is also the same as asking, what is the difference between the old and the new testament. This is because a testament is synonymous with a covenant:
COVENANT
H1285
בְּרִית
berı̂yth
ber-eeth’
From H1262 (in the sense of cutting (like H1254)); a compact (because made by passing between pieces of flesh): – confederacy, [con-]feder[-ate], covenant, league.
Total KJV occurrences: 284
TESTAMENT
G1242
διαθήκη
diathēkē
dee-ath-ay’-kay
From G1303; properly a disposition, that is, (specifically) a contract (especially a devisory will): – covenant, testament.
Total KJV occurrences: 33
TESTAMENT
The word “testament” is only found in the new testament of the bible, not in the old testament as it actually means the same as the word “covenant” used in the old testament. .
By the way, both are literally contracts between us and the Most High.
Now, there has been much confusion between the covenants. We did a previous post telling the difference between commandments, laws, statutes, ordinances, judgments and testimonies. Now this podcast is going a bit more general and looking at the covenants themselves.
CONFUSION BETWEEN THE COVENANTS/TESTAMENTS
So what’s the difference between old and new covenants?
Some believe the old covenant is done away. Some believe we are not in the new covenant. There are also those who believe we are between the old and the new covenant.
Hence, finding the difference between both the old and the new will go a long way into getting us to understand exactly where we really are at this time. We should get an idea where we stand regarding what covenant we are in today.
Listen to this podcast episode and you should be edified.
