DID CREATION OF THE SUN AND MOON GIVE US A LUNAR SABBATH?
Did the creation of the sun and the moon result in us having lunar sabbath? That is what we are implying when we say that when the sun, moon and stars were created, that was when the count started for the sabbath day.
Today, we are going to take a quick look into Genesis 1 to see what it says. Was there a new command after the creation of the luminaries, that the count for the sabbath was now being changed?
THE SUN, MOON AND STARS AND THE SABBATH
There was no new command. It was the same seven day count that YAHUAH sustained after six days of creation. Remember, the sun, moon and stars were created on the fourth day.
However, the Most High was the light before the creation of the luminaries. In reality, the sun moon and stars simply continued the work of the light that was “let” (as in “let” there be) on the first day.
See our post entitled “Did “God” Create Light Twice?”
THE TWO LIGHTS OF CREATION WEEK
Now let us compare the two lights from creation week.
Gen 1:3Â And Aluah said, Let there be light: and there was light.
Gen 1:4Â And Aluah saw the light, that it was good: and Aluah divided the light from the darkness.
Gen 1:5Â And Aluah called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
That was the creation of light! In verse 5, it says:
And the evening and the morning were the first day.
That tells us that creation of light marked the very first day!
Now, light SOURCES were created by the Most High on the fourth day.
THE CREATION OF LUMINATION VS CREATION OF LUMINARY SOURCES
Many do not know that there are two different meanings of light in Genesis. In the first case, he said:
Gen 1:3Â And GodH430 said,H559 Let there beH1961 light:H216 and there wasH1961 light.H216
and in the second case?
Gen 1:14Â And GodH430 said,H559 Let there beH1961 lightsH3974 in the firmamentH7549 of the heavenH8064 to divideH914 H996 the dayH3117 fromH996 the night;H3915 and let them beH1961 for signs,H226 and for seasons,H4150 and for days,H3117 and years:H8141
What is the difference between H216 and H3974?
On day one he created light. This light just means light. It is not referring to the source of light. That source, of course was YAHUAH. How do we know that? Because there is nothing new under the sun, and it is prophesied in Revelation that the splendor of YAHUAH will go back to being the light.
Rev 21:23Â And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
Day four on the other hand is when he created light sources.
Are these light sources (sun, moon and stars) going to restart the count of days, to now become day one? Are we going to restart the week (as some do), saying time started on the fourth day?
Let’s see.
The Sabbath
Day four?
Gen 1:14Â And Aluah said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
Gen 1:15Â And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
Gen 1:16Â And Aluah made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
Gen 1:17Â And Aluah set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
Gen 1:18Â And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and Aluah saw that it was good.
Gen 1:19Â And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
On day four, he created the luminaries to do these things:
- To divide the day from the night
- To be for signs
- To be for for seasons (moed/feasts/appointed times),
- To be for days
- To be for years
- To give light upon the earth
- To rule over the day and over the night
- To divide the light from the darkness
The most important one we want to look at is “to be for days.” Why?
Days is the basic unit of months, years, feasts and sabbaths.
Did this day restart the count of days to the sabbath?
Remember, this was the fourth day. Let’s see if the counter for the week was reset to the first day as the lunar calendar (and others are suggesting.
See it? They were created on the fourth day, but the fourth day remained the fourth day! Then he kept the sabbath on the seventh day. Nowhere does it even hint that now these light sources were created, we now have a new count to seven days.
YAHUAH WAS THE LIGHT FROM THE FIRST DAY
The Most High was the light from the first day to the 3rd day. Then on the fourth day, he made light sources to CONTINUE to give light upon the earth.
The creation of these sources do not restart creation week!
CONCLUSION – DID CREATION OF THE SUN AND MOON GIVE US A LUNAR SABBATH?
Just like when I was younger and living with my parents? When I left their home to live on my own, it did not change my age. It only changed how I operated in life.
It is the same thing! The creation of the luminaries does not change the order of the week, it simply changes how light is produced on the earth.
The proof in that? He kept the seventh day sabbath on the seventh day. That means three days after he created the luminaries (light sources created on day four) the Most High kept the same order. There is nowhere that he decreed that it should be changed.
The first day of creation when he said “let there be light” was when the seven day count started for the sabbath, and there is no record in scripture that the Most High changed it.
